in 1926, Eleanor Roosevelt founded a furniture company. It's purpose was to provide work for unemployed young men. So, along with Marion Dickerman, Nancy Cook and Caroline O’Day (funding support), she founded Valkill Furniture. She realized very quickly that untrained farm hands could not build fine furniture, so she also hired several European furniture craftsman.
She built primarily colonial furniture, but to paraphrase her, “we’ll build whatever the market will buy. Right now they’re buying colonial furniture”. i secured the trademark in 2015 and have been producing limited designs on commission. valkillfurniture.com
